N3 crash: Transport Minister to visit the scene and assess damage

Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga will visit the accident scene where over 30 vehicles were involved in a crash on the N3.

Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga will visit the accident scene of the multi-vehicle crash on the N3 around Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, 11 April.

The visit comes after five people were killed and others injured in the horrific crash which involved 22 light motor vehicles, eight minibus taxis and five trucks on Monday, 10 April.

MINISTER TO VISIT N3 CRASH SCENE

According to the Department of Transport, Chikunga will assess the level of damage and progress made so far in order to open the highway for traffic.

Chikunga will be joined by the Road Traffic Management Corporation and KwaZulu-Natal provincial traffic authorities.

CAUSE OF ACCIDENT BEING INVESTIGATED

As previously reported by The South African, traffic came at a standstill in both the North and South bound on the N3 between Hilton and Cedara following the multi-vehicle crash.

In an interview on Newzroom Afrika, Ncalane said the Johannesburg bound lane is closed while the Durban bound lane is also affected as it is used for emergency services and recoveries.

“At this stage we are investigating the possible cause of the accident. We are calling on motorists to be extra cautious as there is inclement weather and warnings that have been issued by the South African Weather Services which we can expect overnight,” he said.
