Violent protests blocked traffic at entrances to the N2 on the South Coast near Port Edward on Monday morning.

Reports and video footage that circulated on social media early on Monday included a series of videos depicting angry protestors throwing stones at oncoming traffic.

The protestors blocked the road with large rocks, logs and rubble which they had set alight.

One N2 protestor can be heard in a video in which he calls out to politicians saying ‘we are protesting for infrastructure and development.’

KZN SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said that about 400 protestors had taken to the streets, blocking early morning traffic.

“Protest action erupted this morning in the area of KwaNzimakwe. The protesters blockaded all the entrances of the N2 from the area,” Gwala said.

“About 400 people took to the road in the early hours of the morning and used rocks and logs to block the road. The N2 between Munster and Port Edward is currently inaccessible due to debris placed on the road,” she said.

Gwala said that Port Shepstone Public Order Police were currently monitoring the situation on the N2.

“No damages or injuries have been reported,” Gwala said.

The lower South Coast area of KwaZulu-Natal has been plagued by intermittent service delivery protests in recent months. Violent protestors have repeatedly blocked the N2 and interlinking roads, causing traffic chaos in the region.
