Punters were ‘placing their bets’ on their favourite N2 horses which ran in the N2 Umhlali Sprint outside Durban on Wednesday.

Several motorists snapped and filmed some 12 to 24 horses that we running wild in the fast lane for the finish on the busy stretch of the N2 southbound carriageway and posted the videos online.

One of the latest video’s to emerge was this this one that captured a stray equestrian pedestrian keeping to his grassy line on the middle of the freeway. The horses appeared unperturbed by passing traffic and had their eyes focused firmly on the finish post – freedom awaiting, at last.

Some social media commentators joked about placing their bets on the horses while others remarked that “even the horses are protesting” alluding to the recent service delivery protests held on the N2 and N3 in the province.

Mystery initially surrounded how the horses had bolted and the Road Traffic Inspectorate was alerted to join the race to catch the horses. The horses appeared happy and well fed and one white horse could be seen in the video The South African shared earlier, glancing left to ensure he stayed  his lane, and out of the way of curious passing motorists.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane initially said that it was unclear where the horses had escaped from and he was concerned about where the authorities would hold the horses as there was no local pound in the area.

“There are some stray animals on the road and we have sent our team there to take them out of the road but also to chase the owners as well. We don’t know how the animals came to be there. There is a team that has captured the horses but I don’t know where they have put them as we don’t have a pound there,” Ncalane said.
