A woman was killed in a hit and run after escaping an earlier N2 crash unscathed on Monday.

A Durban woman who survived a major N2 crash that left the vehicle she was travelling in on its side on the N2 was killed just minutes later while searching for her missing cellphone.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) said on its Facebook Page that the woman had been killed in a secondary crash on the N2 in a hit and run incident in the early hours of Monday morning.

“A passenger in a Toyota Hilux bakkie that overturned was killed while searching for her cellphone on the south bound lane of the N2 between Umhlanga and North Coast Road this morning,” Rusa said.

Rusa said that one of its members who was patrolling the freeway had stopped at the scene of the accident where a bakkie was lying on its side in the road. The vehicle was lying in the centre median of the freeway.

“The officer called for assistance at 4.09am. The driver of the overturned vehicle informed the reaction officer that he was travelling with his girlfriend from Pinetown to Cornubia. As they approached the Umhlanga offramp he lost control of his vehicle which veered into the south bound lane and overturned. The couple were not injured in the initial accident,” Rusa said.
Rusa added that emergency services had already begun clearing the scene of the accident when the woman decided that she wanted to search for her missing cellphone.

“She was struck by an unknown vehicle which was travelling in the extreme right lane. The vehicle sped off without stopping. The woman landed approximately 50 meters away from the point of impact,” Rusa said.

Rusa said that paramedics were called out to the scene of the N2 crash where they declared the woman dead on arrival. The eThekwini Fire Department attended the scene of the accident and secured the scene.
