MUT student murderer sentenced to 22 years imprisonment

MUT student murderer Bongani Sanele Mlambo was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment for stabbing his final year Engineering girlfriend.

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) student murderer Bongani Sanele Mlambo was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment on Friday, 3 March, in the Durban High Court.

MUT STUDENT XOLILE MBATHA KILLED IN FINAL YEAR

Mlambo, 28, stabbed his MUT girlfriend Xolile Mbatha, a final-year electrical engineering student, in July 2022 at Ark Royal student residence in Mahatma Gandhi Road, Durban.

The accused murderer vanished into thin air for over a month. IOL reported that in his plea, Mlambo told the court in October 2022 that after killing her student girl friend he jumped into a taxi going to Umlazi and then fled to his homestead in Hluhluwe.

Mlambo handed himself over to police nearly two months after the murder.

STAB WOUNDS SUFFERED BY THE DECEASED

It is reported that the sentenced murderer stabbed Xolile over 40 times at the school premises.

The tragic incident highlighted security concerns among MUT residences in Durban. However, MUT spokesperson Azwi Mufamadi promised to heightened security at the residences, including installing panic buttons.

“We have external residences which are not owned by MUT, but they are owned by service providers who we pay to use the residences. 
“So what we have done is that we have changed the standard operating procedure that we have with these residence owners to include not only just raising the number of security personnel in each and every residence,” said Mufamadi.

WHEN WAS XOLILE MBATHA WAS LAID TO REST

Xolile was laid to rest in her home town of Umsinga, north of the province in August last year (2022).
