A parrot became an unlikely ally in a murder investigation after a woman, and her dog were murdered, India Today reports.

A strange solve to a murder investigation

On February 20, 2014, Neelam Sharma, the wife of Vijay Sharma, the editor-in-chief of a leading Agra newspaper, was murdered in her own home.

The home was robbed, and the police were unable to find any leads until Vijay Sharma’s pet parrot began screaming the name of Sharma’s nephew.

Upon hearing the parrot’s cries, Vijay Sharma became suspicious and requested that the police question his nephew, Ashu.

Ashu ultimately confessed to murdering Neelam with the help of his friend, Ronnie Massey.

Special Judge Mohammad Rashid sentenced both Ashu and Ronnie to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 72,000 (R15 842) based on Ashu’s confession and subsequent evidence.

Parrots aren’t just good at solving murder cases; here are a few more facts about them.

Hundreds of species of parrots exist, exhibiting a wide range of color, size, shape, and habitats.

Many parrot species fly for miles each day and require ample space to extend their wings.

Some species are even known to use tools. Researchers have conducted various studies on parrot behavior.

This such as observing Greater Vasa Parrots using date pits and pebbles as tools to grind down cockle shells.

Another study recorded the behavior of African Grey Parrots.

They noted their strong desire to help their partner or flock-mates acquire food.

Species vary significantly in size, with the Buff-Faced Pygmy Parrot weighing less than an ounce and Kakapos weighing anywhere from 1,3 to 3 kilograms.

They typically live for a long time, with larger species having longer lifespans, some even rivaling those of humans.

However, accounts of age are mostly from captive parrots, as the wild is the best environment for them to lead their socially and emotionally complex lives.
