“This killing is very barbaric and senseless. However, we are confident in our South African law enforcement agencies that the perpetrators of this heinous criminal conduct will be brought to book and must be severely punished,” he told The South African.

MAYOR STRENGTHENED THE ANC

Maluleke took over the mayoral seat in 2018 after the ousting of Joyce Bila. Bila is among seven mayors dismissed by the ANC for illegally investing funds in VBS Mutual Bank.

Since taking on the mayoral role leading up to the 2021 elections, he strengthened the party. Maluleke was able to strengthen the electoral numbers in the district and played a key role in the recent regional electoral conference.

“The ANC has lost a dedicated and disciplined leader, an embodiment of the revolutionary sacrifice, he sacrificed his entire life to the liberation movement.”

POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT FOR MAYOR KILLERS

The national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola has issued an instruction to the Limpopo police to track down the killers.

Maluleke and his son were attacked by three armed men who entered their home and tried to rob them on Thursday night. As the two did not comply with the intruders’ instructions, they were shot, police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda said. Maluleke died at the scene. His wounded son is in hospital.

But the ANC suspects no foul play in the murder. Machaka said the killing is “very barbaric and senseless”.

“As the ANC in the province, we don’t suspect any foul play at this stage. However, we are leaving all investigations to the police and once that process is concluded, we can then develop a new view the matter. For now, let us allow the investigation to take its course,” he said.

The party and its leaders visited the family of Maluleke to physically express their condolences.
