Three murder accused who robbed an 18-year-old learner of his cellphone and stabbed him to death, abandon their bail application in the Mamelodi Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning, 25 January 2023.

The murder suspects allegedly robbed 18-year-old Mabutho Jenamo from Mamelodi from his cellphone and stabbed him in the neck.

MURDER SUSPECTS ROBBED LEARNER OF HIS CELLPHONE

The 22-year-old Answer Bongani Chauke, 21-year-old Ignatius Mahlogonolo Chabangu, and 18-year-old Tshepang Titus Bilankulu are facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder.

National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the incident happened on 16 January 2023.

Jenamo was walking back from school, Reneilwe Community Learning Centre, with three other friends when they met the accused persons. One of the accused allegedly pulled out a knife, and the friends of the deceased ran away.

The alleged murder suspects grabbed the learner and tried to rob him of his cellphone.

“They proceeded to assault and stab him in the neck with a knife.”

Mahanjana said the learner started running with the accused chasing after him. They tried to stab him again from the back, but his school backpack blocked the knife.

At that time, it is alleged that the learner’s cellphone fell, and one of the accused picked it up and sold it to a friend.

Police recovered the cellphone from the person it was sold to.

“The victim was taken to hospital where he collapsed and died. All the accused were arrested on the day of the incident and have been in custody since.”

The accused abandoned their bail application in court after the prosecutor, Advocate Lizelle September, told the court that the state intended to oppose them.

The matter was postponed to 30 March 2023 for further investigations.
