‘Zille is a habitual liar’: Mashaba bites back in coalition row

The former DA colleagues have ended up in a bitter war of words, after Helen Zille took a dig at Herman Mashaba for his stance on coalitions.

Things are getting spicy in the aftermath of the 2021 Elections, as politicians now turn their attention to possible coalition agreements. Which parties will decide to work together still remains unclear, but already, the high drama of forming a mix-match government has put Helen Zille and Herman Mashaba on the warpath.

Helen Zille guns for Herman Mashaba

Zille, the DA stalwart, used her Twitter account to stir up some trouble. What’s new, right? She posted a screenshot of Mashaba saying that his ActionSA party ‘would never get in bed with the ANC’, ruling out any possible coalition deals with the 109-year-old organisation. However, the rumour mill went into overdrive on Wednesday.

Allegedly, a member of the ANC’S Top Six approached Herman Mashaba about a possible coalition deal. Having been so staunchly opposed to such a partnership, these discussions looked set to undermine the former Mayor of Johannesburg, and his firm anti-ANC stance – but the request was comprehensively rebuffed by the ActionSA leader.

“The only party that approached me informally is the ANC yesterday, and I asked them to wait for my call. It was one of the Top Six … and I was not prepared to entertain that discussion. I just said to them ‘you are asking something that is completely impossible’. I said ‘wait for my call’ and I can tell you that call will not come in 300 years.”

Will ActionSA form a coalition with the ANC? It’s unlikely…

Mashaba told the media that the chat was very informal, and that he would not deal with the ANC ‘for another 300 years’. But, after clearing the air, Helen Zille still decided to go for the 62-year-old – but he was having none of it.

“I’ve noted the DA leaders attempting to misrepresent my words and deliberately mislead the public. I’m not surprised. To be clear, I was informally approached by the ANC about potential coalitions. I told them to get lost. The ActionSA Senate unanimously affirmed this position.”

  • Mr. Mashaba also went on to brand Zille as a ‘habitual and unashamed liar’ – ouch.
