The African National Congress (ANC) has conceded, not in so many words, that it its performance in the local government elections has dropped and says it’s an indication that the party once again, needs to re-evaluate itself and get its house in order.

As of 18:30 on Wednesday, 3 November 2021, 82% of the votes have been counted and show that the ANC has so far claimed 45.91% of the votes, while the DA is at 21.67% followed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at 10.38%. Figures from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) suggest that the ANC is expected to see a decline from 54.5% in 2016 to 46.7% in these polls.

ANC: ‘WE REMAIN THE LEADING PARTY’

The ANC has long preached this message of self-correcting as a party, in the wake of endless allegations of corruption involving its members. Political pundits had warned, ahead of the elections, that the ruling party would suffer at the polls, but the continent’s oldest liberation movement is nonetheless proud of how it has done as it retains pole position.

“These results, and the turnout, is a message to our movement to shape up. Looking at the overall picture that is emerging from results completed, the ANC maintains its national footprint across the country. We remain the leading party nationally and in the majority of districts and municipalities,” said ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe.

The party says it must ensure that the trust from people remains strong through its actions and deliver consistently on its mandate and manifestos.

The ANC will remain resolute on its path of renewal, no matter the difficulties or setbacks. All ANC councillors elected through participation of communities will honour their pledges. Where we received a mandate to govern, we will this week start selection of mayors who are competent and can lead the renewal of their communities
