With three-quarters of all votes counted across the country, it’s fair to say we have a good idea of who’s winning what – and where coalition governments will be needed. The Election Results have streamed in steadily on Wednesday, and now we’ve hit this milestone, it seems like a good time to check the national, provincial, and metro picture.

2021 Elections: Latest updates for Wednesday 3 November

The ANC is now all-but-certain to fall below the 50% mark from the countrywide vote, and may finish on a number nearer 45%. The DA hasn’t quite capitalised on this decline for the ruling party, although it has won some key municipalities. Several ‘smaller parties’ contesting our metros now find themselves in positions of power, too.

Control of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Nelson Mandela Bay, and even Tshwane looks like it will come down to the negotiating skills of either the ANC or the DA, as both parties prepare their coalition pitches to help build a government in these regions. Here’s how the rest of the land lies on Wednesday afternoon:

NATIONAL ELECTION RESULTS

• ANC: 46.19% of all ballots cast, 7.679 million votes in total.
• DA: 21.79% of all ballots cast, 3.622 million votes in total.
• EFF: 10.3% of all ballots cast, 1.712 million votes in total.
• IFP: 4.9% of all ballots cast.
• FF Plus: 2.5% of all ballots cast.
• Patriotic Alliance: 0.99% of all ballots cast.
• GOOD: 0.74% of all ballots cast.
• Other parties and independents: 10.5% of all ballots cast.

METRO ELECTION RESULTS

• Cape Town: DA 54.5%, ANC 18.5%, GOOD 4.87%, FF Plus 3.5%, PA 2.75%.
• Mangaung: ANC 45%, DA 31%, EFF 9.5%, FF Plus 5.5%, PA 3.5%.
• Buffalo City: ANC 60.75%, DA 18.25%, EFF 12%, ATM 1%, PAC 1%.
