National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Msibi, Anele Sonke Msibi and Njabulo Mkhonto were granted bail of R20 000.

The 45-year-old former MEC was arrested on Monday, 11 October, in connection with a fatal shooting incident in Mpumalanga that left two people dead and one injured.

In the wake of the arrest, the Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane removed him from his position in the provincial cabinet and the African National Congress (ANC) fired him as elections manager.

The Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court said Msibi and his co-accused must not interfere with state witnesses, as part of the bail conditions.

The trio is also required to report to the Pienaar police station every Monday and Friday and surrender their passports to the investigating officer before 16:30 on Tuesday. They are also not allowed to leave the province without informing the investigating officer beforehand.

All five individuals accused in this matter are expected to appear before the court again on 6 December 2021. The investigation into the matter continues.

Hundreds of Msibi’s supporters gathered outside the court on Tuesday. He addressed the crowd and said he welcomed the Premier’s decision to release him from his position.

The decision of the PEC for me to step aside is accepted unconditionally. The decision by the Premier of the province to dismiss me is accepted,” said Msibi.
