Beer bottles stuffed with cotton wool found at scene where municipal building burnt

Security guards at the municipal building reportedly heard a loud bang before they found 11 office blocks on fire.

The municipal building in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga caught fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 14 September. Security guards at the building heard a bang before they saw the flames.

MUNICIPAL BUILDING BURNT IN MPUMALANGA

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the fire broke out at approximately 2:00.

“According to the information, security guards were on duty when they heard a loud bang coming from the building,” he said.

The security guards inspected the scene and found 11 office blocks on fire (10 finance offices and one internal audit office).

The fire service was summoned to the municipal building to tackle the blaze and the police immediately began their investigation.

“Some beer bottles that were stuffed with cotton wool inside were also discovered and these items were seized to form part of the investigation,” said the police spokesperson.

The Mpumalanga police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela, expressed her concern over the burnt offices and said the damaged municipal building will have a detrimental impact on service delivery in the area.
