The police in Mpumalanga are investigating a double murder of an argument between neighbours turned deadly on Monday, 5 September. The men involved in the fight were known to be friends, said police.

FRIENDS SUCCUMB TO THEIR INJURIES AFTER A DEADLY FIGHT

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the incident occurred in Boschfontein outside Schoemansdal near Komatipoort in the early hours of Monday.

“According to information, a 41-year-old man was engaged in a fight with his 31-year-old neighbour, which led to fatalities to both neighbours who are also reportedly known to be friends,” said the police spokesperson.

The local hospital summoned the Schoemansdal police after two injured patients arrived. One man had bruises on his face and a fractured jaw and hand. The other patient was hacked on the head with an axe. Both succumbed to their injuries.

The police discovered that the men both lived “as neighbours and friends” in Boschfontein. It is unclear what led to the deadly fight, at this stage.

“Violence is not even a point to consider especially amongst neighbours or friends who experience differences. The two deaths could have been avoided,” said Mpumalanga police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Daphney Manamela.

Manamela said the incident was regrettable and urged community members to seek professional help instead of resorting to violence.
