Movies & Series: What to watch on Netflix SA this December

The holiday season is approaching so that means we will have even more time to binge watch. We take a look at what stands out on Netflix this December.

Netflix South Africa

December is a time for wrapping up the year’s work and taking some time to get a break. For many, kicking back and turning on the TV is one of the most relaxing things you can do. With Netflix’s presence in South Africa growing by the day, we thought we would take a look at some of the best movies and series to watch this December.

New to Netflix this December.

Netflix’s original content has been hitting the nail on the head time after time over the last year or so. With some shows returning for new seasons and even a movie starring a Holywood icon known the world over.

Bright (22 Dec)

Netflix December

A Netflix original movie starring Will Smith, Bright will release all across the globe on the same day. No cinemas, just you, Will Smith and your TV…

Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human played by Will Smith, and Jakoby, an orc played by Joel Edgerton) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.

The Crown Season 2 (Dec 8)

Season 1 of The Crown saw streamers across the globe gain a new fascination with the Royal Family. A young Queen Elizabeth II coming to terms with her role as Queen saw Claire Foy deliver a standout acting performance. John Lithgow also delivered such a stunning performance as Winston Churchill, he ended up winning an Emmy Award.

With season 2 launching on December 8, fans are eagerly awaiting the series’ return.

Easy Season 2 (1 Dec)

Easy is an anthology (collection of stories) series from creator Joe Swanberg that explores diverse Chicago characters as they fumble through the modern maze of love, sex, technology and culture. Season 1 included stars like Dave Franco and Orlando Bloom and did a great job of making the complexities around love genuinely funny.

With season 2 bringing in new stories and continuing the old, Easy is the perfect show to watch with bae or anyone who is a hopeless romantic.

Netflix December and the perfect couch combo?

Dave Chappelle: Equanimity  (Dec 31)

If you’re looking for some comedy laughs on New Year’s Eve with friends, the iconic Dave Chappelle is bringing another comedy special to Netflix.

Atypical

This one may already be out now but its perfect for the December holiday feelings. Holidays are about family and the family from Atypical is oh so real and oh so complex.

Atypical is a coming of age story that follows Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny yet emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal?

We recently reviewed the show and found it to be full of brilliance. If you want to smile and really “feel” this December, then Atypical is a must watch.

While Netflix continues to get new content, trust us when we say these are the shows and movies to look out for this month.
