Motsoeneng says SABC won’t listen to Icasa ruling

SABC Hlaudi Motsoeneng has remained defiant in the face of a ruling by Icasa and says the public broadcaster is willing to challenge the decision in court.

Motsoeneng says SABC won’t lis

Earlier this week, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) ordered the SABC to reverse its decision not to broadcast any violent protests on its television channels. The body said that the SABC could lose its licence if it does not co-operate.

And it looks like things might have to be that extreme after SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng insisted the SABC will not be playing along with the ruling.

IOL reported that  Communications Minister Faith Muthambi defied an ANC summons to attend a meeting with the party’s subcommittee on communications to explain the mess at the SABC.

All this while  Motsoeneng insisted that there was nothing wrong with the public broadcaster’s policy.

“We are within the Broadcasting Act. We are within the regulations. The Icasa ruling, we are challenging that ruling,” said Motsoeneng according to IOL.

He insisted that the SABC would be willing to go to the Constitutional Court to challenge the ruling and mocked “clever people” who dared challenge the ruling calling all the fuss “one big hullabaloo” and said that no one can tell the SABC what to do.

The media briefing was disturbed by a protester who shouted‚ “away with Hlaudi” and “history will judge you”. He was subsequently removed by security.
