A Mpumalanga 67-year-old mother and 35-year-old son were arrested on Wednesday, 15 March, for using a gun to pay off a drug dealer in Secunda.

SON OWED DRUG DEALER R1 500

The pair were arrested for contravening the provisions of the firearm control Act 60 of 2000.

Mother and son were nabbed in Secunda during an intelligence-driven disruptive operation conducted by Secunda-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation and the Secunda Crime Intelligence.

MOTHER AND SON USE GUN TO PAY OFF DRUG DEBT

Police spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi says this followed an intensive investigation about a gun confiscated during the arrest of an alleged drug dealer on 09 March 2023.

The Hawks investigation revealed that the firearm belonged to this family. The duo allegedly released the .38 special revolver and 6 x rounds of live ammunition to the dealer. The son owed the dealer R1 500 for drugs. The mother ad son later offered the gun to the drug dealer as payment.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Gerber, appeals to community members in Mpumalanga to provide information about drug dealing and illegal possession of a firearm in the province.

In an unrelated incident, a 48-year-old Warrant Officer was off duty at the time of the murders. He murdered his 44-year-old estranged wife and her male companion.

According to information, the off-duty police officer stationed at Nietverdiend went to a house in Sandvlakte where he allegedly fired several shots and instantly killed a 30-year-old man and his estranged wife.

The policeman handed himself over after the murder of his estranged wife and her companion. He also handed his firearm, used in committing the murders, over to the police.
