Newly released data from the South African Human Rights Commission seem to suggest that South Africans are becoming more racist.

For the period of April to December 2015, the HRC received 470 complaints of which more than half, 270 to be exact, were about racist comments.

This was down on the previous year (493 complaints of which 293 were about racist comments), but the HRC now say they will no longer make public statements about investigations into racism in the country.

The start of 2016 has been a turbulent one with a number of racist incidents making headlines. Penny Sparrow, economist Chris Hart and Gauteng sports department employee Velaphi Khumalo have all been reported to the HRC in the last few weeks.

The FW de Klerk Foundation submitted a further 45 social media posts, saying they were inciting violence against white people.

The provinces with the most complaints for racist remarks in 2015 were as follows:

Gauteng – 121

Kwazulu-Natal – 41

Western Cape – 29

Free State – 25
