Mob justice: One person killed, another injured

Police have condemned two separate instances of mob justice where one man was killed, and another was left seriously injured

Members of the Meqheleng community in Extension 11 and Zone 8 attacked two male suspects in separate incidents of mob justice.

The police are conducting investigations into the matter.

One of the suspects was killed while the other was badly assaulted and subsequently arrested for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

One suspect assaulted after beating woman with a firearm

On Sunday, 19 February 2023, at about 02:30, a suspect attempted to rob a woman with a firearm in Zone 8 Meqheleng near Ficksburg.

The suspect beat the woman with the firearm, causing a wound on her forehead.

The community in the area intervened and attacked the suspect.

The police were alerted and found the suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the local hospital for medical treatment.

The police have opened a case of attempted robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They also opened a case of contravening the Immigration Act against the suspect.

He is expected to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court once discharged from the hospital.

Man dies after mob justice incident

In another incident that occurred at about 17:50 in Extension 11 Meqheleng, the community members attacked a 28-year-old man who succumbed to his injuries.

The police are investigating the motive behind the attack.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation continues.

“The police are sternly warning members of the community not to resort to mob justice as it does not provide a solution to address crime.” a statement read.

Instead, they urge the community to report any criminal acts or suspicious individuals to the police to allow the law to take its course.
