According to News24, around 200 people gathered in an open field in Scottsdene where the police decided to start inspecting vehicles.

So they did what police officers do, cordoned off the area and checked each car… until they got to the straw that broke the camel’s back. Police officers found a car without valid registration documents and when they tried to take the car in all hell broke loose.

According to the City of Cape Town, “the crowd started pelting officers with rocks and bottles and smashing the windscreens of some of the patrol vehicles. Six vehicles were damaged in the process.”

The City, however, refuses to relent and has rallied behind the police in their efforts to root out any criminal activity.

“I have news for them though: it will not deter our staff from doing their jobs and enforcing the law, which is very clear in respect of the infringement that resulted in yesterday’s riot. We will continue to impound vehicles that are contravening the provisions of the National Road Traffic Act,” said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security.

According to smith, police will return every week until this issue has been resolved.
