A missing 10-year-old boy was found in a shallow grave after a dog was seen with the human leg in its mouth.

THE BOY WENT MISSING TEN DAYS EARLIER

According to police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele, 10-year-old Ayabulela Abongwe Kubheka from the Nyezane area went missing on 15 December 2021.

“On 15 December 2021 at 19:00, a 10-year-old Ayabulela Abongwe Kubheka from Nyezane area disappeared from the care of his grandmother who had left him in bed to warm a meal.

“On her return, the boy was nowhere to be found and was reported missing at Amangwe police station for investigation,” she said.

THE GRUESOME DISCOVERY WAS MADE ON CHRISTMAS DAY

On Christmas Day, Ayabulela’s uncle was outside when a dog was seen with the human leg in its mouth.

The uncle later spotted the dogs digging in the neighbour’s yard and went to investigate.

“Upon investigating, he discovered a shallow grave and called the nearby community members to assist him in digging up the grave. They found the body of Ayabulela and called the police,” Mbele said.

A RELATIVE OF THE BOY WAS ARRESTED

She added that the 32-year-old neighbour who was also a relative attempted to escape but was apprehended by the community.

“The relative allegedly told the community that he killed the boy by choking him because he needed his body to protect his house from being bewitched by people, he dug a shallow grave in his yard and buried him,” she said.

RELATIVE ALLEGEDLY SAID HE CHOKED THE BOY

Mbele said the man was arrested and appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for charges of murder.

He is remanded into police custody until 6 January 2022 for further investigation.

THE RELATIVE WILL BE BACK IN COURT NEXT MONTH

“The community is applauded for not taking the law into their own hands by attacking the suspect and informing the police. People who continue to commit vigilantism will face the might of the law,” she said.
