We’re well on the road to the 2023 Miss Universe Pageant where 84 entrants will be competing for the crown. Southern Africans have reason to be excited as both Miss SA and Miss Zimbabwe have made the top 10 of the Voice For Change.

The 72nd Miss Universe Pageant will be taking place in El Savador on the 18th of November 2023. The search to find who will replace the United States’ R’Bonney Gabriel will be hotly contested with entrants from across the world. Africans will feel confident about their chances, but two women from Zimbabwe and South Africa are catching the eye in the early stages. South Africa’s Bryoni Govender is emerging as an early favourite, while Zimbabwe’s Brooke Buck-Johnson is also gaining momentum.

The other thing that ties Govender and Buck-Johnson together is the fact that they are sharing a room at the Miss Universe camp in El Salvador. The two pageant winners from neighbouring nations are now sharing neighbouring bunkers ahead of the pageant, and this wouldn’t be the last time they get paired together.

The two have made the top 10 for the Voice of Change initiative where the top three of this particular campaign will be announced at the ceremony. Both South Africans and Zimbabweans were elated to see their candidates in this shortlist. Now the hope will be that both ladies can carry that momentum into the grand finale on the 18th of November.

Following a Miss Universe dress rehearsal and a costume show on the 17th of November, both local pageant winners now have one final chance to put the finishing touches on their outfits and costumes. Judges will also need to be convinced by their responses to questions during the interview rounds.

Bryoni Govender is a firm believer in standing up for girls rights across the world and that is likely to be a focus in her responses. Meanwhile, her roommate Brooke Buck-Johnson has her heart rooted in developing young leaders across the continent.
