Milnerton: Man, 44, found carting alcohol and drugs after curfew hours

While most members of the public were confined to their homes in Milnerton on Monday, one man was out and about flouting lockdown rules.

A 44-year-old man was arrested in Milnerton in the Western Cape on Monday night 11 January for breaking Level 3 lockdown rules. Not only was the man out on the streets after curfew but he was also found transporting alcohol and drugs. 

MAN FOUND WITH WHISKEY AND MANDRAX TABLETS IN MILNERTON 

While the majority of the public confined themselves to their homes in Milnerton as determined by the Disaster Management Act, one man appeared to have no regard for the law. 

On Monday night after 21:00, a 44 year old man was arrested for taking to the streets in his vehicle after curfew hours.

After a search, police found six boxes of whiskey and a box of mandrax tablets with an estimated value of R30 000 in the boot of his car. 

“He also had an amount of R2 4080 in his possession which he could not account for. The suspect was stopped by Milnerton police in a vehicle checkpoint at around 21:30 and arrested,” said Colonel Andrè Traut. 

In an unrelated incident, members of Milnerton police reacted on a tipoff and searched a residence in Joe Slovo on Monday where dagga with an estimated street value of R8 000 was confiscated. The 26-year-old suspect was arrested and both these suspects are scheduled to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Wednesday 13 January 2021. 

MORE THAN 1 000 PEOPLE ARRESTED IN NORTH WEST FOR BREAKING LOCKDOWN RULES 

Apart from the incident in Milnerton, Western Cape, the North West has faced its own set of challenges. 

According to police in the North West, 1 458 suspects were arrested in all districts through the Safer Festive Season Operation since Monday 28 December 2020 for various contraventions relating to the Adjusted Level 3 Lockdown regulations. 

According to police, the following Level 3 lockdown rules were broken; 

  • Failure to confine to residences: 625 people
  • Being in a public place without / not wearing a mask: 661 people
  • Sale, dispensing and distribution of liquor: 115 people
  • Failure to close cinemas / restaurants / faith based institution: 52 people
  • Carrying of more than 70% of the licensed capacity for long distance travel by a bus or taxi service: two people; and 
  • Exceeding the maximum number of customers and employees by a business: three

The Provincial Commissioner of the North West Lieutenant General Sello Kwena applauded the law enforcement officials for their hard work in ensuring compliance with the regulations.
