The final results of the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) metro municipality in the Eastern Cape are in and as expected it will be governed by a coalition again. The nation’s two biggest parties have an equal share of the council seats and negotiations with other political parties will determine who ends up leading the metro.

NMB 100% COMPLETE

According to the IEC Municipal Election Results Dashboard, 100 percent of the votes in the metro have been finalised:

257 of 257 Voting Districts completed

60 of 60 Wards completed

1 of 1 Municipalities completed

120 of 120 Seats allocated

WHO WILL BE ON THE COUNCIL?

The Democratic Alliance won the most votes in the NMB metro – 210 007 – which accounted for 39,92 percent of the support. It just about edged the ANC who received 207 443 votes (39,43%).

However, both parties have earned 48 seats out of 120 available on the council.

The EFF placed third with 6,4 percent of the vote and 8 seats. The Northern Alliance, ACDP, VF PLUS, DEFENDERS OF THE PEOPLE (DOP) and Patriotic Alliance (PA) also earned seats.

Coalition talks will probably be very tense in the metro. During the vote-counting process, the DA declared that it will not enter coalitions with the EFF and ANC, which leaves them with limited options.

The EFF said it is willing to listen to any parties that approach it.

The ANC or DA need to secure 50 percent of the seats available plus one if they want to govern – 61 seats.
