Men ‘slowing vaccination rates in Gauteng’ – by refusing to get the jab

In regards to provincial vaccination rates. health officials in Gauteng are now asking a question as old as time: ‘Men, what are you playing at?’

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has faced up to some uncomfortable truths on Friday, revealing that the vaccination rates in his province are relatively low – and it’s largely down to men.

Who isn’t getting their vaccines in Gauteng?

Of course, there are also concerns about vaccine uptake in the elderly. Those aged 60 and over haven’t exactly flocked out in their numbers either, with just over half of the provincial population in that age group getting their shots. Despite the enthusiasm in younger age groups, older citizens remain relatively resistant to the inoculations.

“What is our major concern right now is that a lot of people aged over 60 haven’t even gone for their first jab yet. These are vulnerable people, just over half of them have been vaccinated. It’s so important after this third wave, people cannot just go out and do everything they wish. When people are vaccinated, problems are easier to deal with.”

Vaccination rates: Men identified as ‘real problem’ for uptake

Makhura stated that his main concern, however, is men in general. Only four in 10 eligible males have signed up to receive their jabs so far – way below the rates of women in Gauteng. The Premier says this is causing ‘real problems’.

“Our vaccination programme has reached many women in Gauteng. But just 43% of men have had their jabs. In some regions, we have real problems with men. We commend the women of this province, and the young people too – they have been amazing, especially those aged 35 to 49. They have driven the numbers up.” | David Makhura
