Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety’s MEC, Florence Radzilani, has announced her visit to the site of a horrific accident that resulted in the deaths of 16 people.

Several roleplayers to visit the scene

The visit is scheduled for Saturday, 4 March 2023, and will be attended by other officials such as:

  • Hon Rebecca Seono, Chairperson of the Portfolio on Transport and Community Safety in the Legislature
  • Acting Mayor of Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality
  • Cllr Delly Matjomane
  • Executive Mayor of the Greater Sekhukhune District, Cllr Maleke Mokganyetji

The visit will commence with a briefing session at the Elias Motsoaledi Municipality, followed by an inspection of the accident site on R579.

The media is invited to join the MEC during her visit.

What happened during the accident?

A horrific motor vehicle accident on road R579 in Motetema near Groblersdal claimed the lives of sixteen people on Friday, 3 March 2023, at around 7:00 in the morning.

Law enforcement officers suspect that the accident occurred when a minibus taxi overtook unsafely and collided head-on with a truck and another minibus taxi.

Reckless driving is cited as a possible cause of the crash.

Among the sixteen who died are the drivers of the two minibus taxis and six learners who were being transported to school.

Four passengers with serious injuries were taken to a nearby health facility for medical attention.
