KZN Department of Education MEC Honourable Mbali Frazer has sent words of comfort to the families of learners who were killed in the N2 collision today, Friday, 16 September.

“Education MEC Honourable Mbali Frazer has, on behalf of the entire education fraternity, sent condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, “ the department notified.

ACCIDENT REPORT FROM THE KZNDOE

KZNDOE also confirmed this horrific incident.

“The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal confirms that there has been a horrific accident involving two or more schools in the area of Pongola on the N2. Initial reports indicate that 11 children are confirmed dead by emergency services and that they all met their demise at the scene of the accident,” the department added.

“We will rely on the police and emergency services to continue giving us updates as they discover more information.”

However, eNCA has reported that 16 learners have died from the accident, with the 17th child fighting for his life in hospital after sustaining critical injuries.

It is reported that a bakkie carrying school children collided with a side tipper truck. This tragic accident happened on the N2 highway near Pongola in northern KZN.

MORE LEARNERS INJURED IN THE SOUTHCOAST

Remaining in KZN, another scholar transport was involved in an accident south of the province.

This collision involved a light delivery vehicle and a minibus taxi on the N2 south near the old Durban Airport in Prospecton.

According to emergency services, Emer-G-Med, reports from the scene were that as many as twelve school children sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, whilst one adult suffered moderate injuries.

The accident involved learners aged between 11 and 13.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the injured learners were treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to various nearby hospitals for further medical care.
