Lindiwe Mazibuko, who is the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) former parliamentary leader, had some words to say about how her former party has handled its internal issues recently.

She claimed that she could not fully comprehend what it is exactly de Lille had done wrong to deserve this kind of treatment.

Mazibuko confronts the elephant in the room

On Tuesday, Mazibuko was invited to deliver a memorial lecture at the Cape Town Press Club.

She chose to use this opportunity to address an issue within the DA that has been reduced to murmurs within factions in the party.

What she wanted to know was what exactly de Lille was accused of. It must have been grave enough for the party to resort to “bleeding itself in the public eye”, according to the former member of the DA.

She also added that

“So, she [de Lille] is uppity… she’s an uppity woman of colour. Is that what the accusation is? These allegations of corruption don’t seem to have been followed through. There are allegations of mismanagement, but there’s no real evidence. We are pointed to websites, but the websites don’t really clarify anything.”

The cracks in the DA’s case against de Lille

Mazibuko is the first prominent figure of the party that has come out to call her former party into question over the real motivation behind the urgency to remove de Lille as the Mayor of Cape Town.

It has been a battle for the DA to achieve their objective in removing de Lille from her position.

On the 11th hour of her second ‘motion of no confidence’ sitting, she managed to strike a deal with the party, allowing for a speedier hearing that would consider her terms and conditions.

The DA has said that it plans on concluding the matter with de Lille in August. However, it leaves one to think whether the damage has already been done, especially towards their supporters who are people of colour.
