Is ‘white privilege’ the reason why Matthew Booth is not ‘cancelled’?

Unlike Katlego Maboe no action has been taken against Matthew Booth after cheating allegations surfaced. Is this because of white privilege?

Following cheating allegations that surfaced this week, SuperSport has not taken any action against former Bafana Bafana player and analyst Matthew Booth nor has he lost any sponsors for his initiatives. This has led some to conclude that this is because of “white privilege.”

Booth has been trending on social media after his wife Sonia Booth published damning allegations of an affair with a married woman named Bongangi Möller-Mthombeni.

Netizens have compared the backlash that TV personality Katlego Maboe received from his employer and how he was removed from campaigns he was working on over a “private matter” after cheating and abuse allegations were levelled against him by his ex-partner and  mother of his child Monique Muller.

Katlego was a presenter on SABC 3’s morning show Expresso and also appeared in many Outsurance adverts. He lost it all when companies broke ties with him over the cheating allegations. Katlego has since returned to Expresso and is presenting Tropika Island of Treasure. Notably, this has not been the case for Matthew Booth.

One user took to twitter to question why Booth has not been “cancelled”.

“I know it may be too soon. But can we have a chat around the white male privilege of Matthew Booth being exhibited by the SuperSport decision. Katlego Maboe was lynched by these companies and smeared to the brink of poverty for a ‘private’ matter,” the individual wrote.

While some in the comment section also questioned the same thing, some pointed out that Katlego Maboe also had abuse allegations levelled against him while Booth is accused of cheating only.

SuperSport has distanced itself from the former Bafana Bafana defender’s cheating scandal.

SuperSport Spokesperson, Clinton van der Berg, told City Press that they have had a conversation with Matthew Booth and they will be allowing him to deal with his personal affairs privately.

“We have a simple line which we have and that is, SuperSport is aware of the allegations involving Matthew Booth, which are private,” he said.
