A University of Pretoria (UP) professor has set out a reminder for parents to be careful of the language they use when it comes to pupils who did not perform up to standard in their final exams.

The matric results for the class of 2019 are set to be released by UMalusi on Tuesday 7 January, and the pass rate has hit the 80% threshold for the first time.

Matric results: “Fail” is not the correct word

Professor Kobus Maree – from UP’s psychology department – has cautioned against the use of the word “fail” to describe the endeavours of those who did not achieve the pass mark.

“The phrase ‘insufficient achievement’ is more appropriate”, Maree said in a statement.

Maree also assured pupils that their matric results do not necessarily reflect their future success.

“It hurts when one learns that the outcomes of an examination were less successful than expected. But step back emotionally and interpret the experience logically. All human beings experience success and are less successful from time to time. This is the most normal thing in the world.”

He presented options those with less successful results could take, including looking to improve by applying for supplementary exams or even repeating grades or subjects.

Over time, learners’ Grade 12 subject symbols will mean very little,” Maree says.

“Learners should ask themselves what their short-, medium-, and long-term aims are and decide why they are studying; what their end goal is.”

However, Maree still maintained that hard work was still a necessary ingredient for success.

“This is a key characteristic and strength in these rapidly changing and uncertain times,” Maree said.

The professor encouraged pupils to not have their heart set on one institution, but to explore other options in order to make a more informed choice.

“A tip is to thoroughly research career opportunities for pupils who have already graduated – both now and in the future. Ask yourself regularly whether you will still be employable in like 10, or 15 years’ time.
