The results of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examinations will officially be released to the class of 2020 on Tuesday, 23 February 2021, a day after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga makes other announcements pertaining to the exam.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some matric pupils may have questions as to how they can access their results. The basic education department has said that while pupils are encouraged to visit the website, they would still be required go to their respective schools to receive their matric results physically.

The department’s spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga has said that all the necessary COVID-19 preventative measures would be in place, but advised matric pupils to fetch their results only in the later part of the day. This is because with learners back in the classroom, they want to do all they can to prevent super spreaders.

“People would want to rush to get their results to see how they have performed and their schools would be able to assist them with that…we are not saying they shouldn’t go, they should still go because all other learners are in school anyway. But if you are in matric going to collect your results, don’t go too early in the morning,” Mhlanga said in interview with eNCA.

What if you’re not happy with your matric results?

Unfortunately for some learners, the COVID-19 pandemic could have taken too much of a toll on their studies and they might not have fared so well. Some may simply not be satisfied with their results. In light of this, the department has a series of options that can be explored:

Matric pupils can apply to have their exam scripts either re-marked or re-checked – we know one mark can make the difference between a pass and a fail. However none of this would be free as to have one question paper re-marked will set you back R120 while you’ll be expected to pay R29 to have them check your script.

The closing date for both online and manual applications is 10 March.

The department said that the supplementary examination in February and March has been phased out and is no longer available. A new examination is available during May/June where candidates can improve their results or complete outstanding results. The closing date for application is 31 March.
