The matric results of 2017 will only be officially out on Friday, but the pass rate for the country was announced on Thursday by  Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga.

She says that the NSC pass rate has consistently stayed above the 70% mark over the last seven years and lauded the 2017 matrics for maintaining the standard.

“The Class of 2017 must be commended for maintaining this trend. The 2017 NSC overall pass rate, with the progressed learners excluded, stands at 76.5%, a 0.3% improvement from the 76.2% achieved in 2016.

“However, with the progressed learners included, the overall pass rate, stands at 75.1%, a 2.6% improvement from the 72.5% achieved in 2016. This, represents a total of 401 435 candidates, who had passed the 2017 NSC examinations. Well done to the Class of 2017.”

The Free State once again achieved the highest pass rate of all provinces with a 86% pass rate, down 2.2% from 2016. Gauteng and the Western Cape also performed well while the Eastern Cape once again had the lowest pass rate of all provinces in South Africa.

Schools with a zero and 100 percent pass rate

Nine schools in total had a zero percent pass rate, an improvement from 18 schools that achieved no passes in 2016.

In total, 497 schools achieved a 100 percent rate. A total of 115 schools recorded a 100% pass for five consecutive years. Of those,  35 of these are in Gauteng and another 32 in the Western Cape.

Matric pass rates by province (including progressed learners):

  • Eastern Cape – 65%
  • Limpopo – 65.6%
  • KZN – 72.9%
  • Mpumalanga – 74.8%
  • Northern Cape – 76.6%
  • North West – 79.4%
  • Gauteng – 85.1%
  • Western Cape – 82.7%
  • Free State – 86.1%

The department’s Dr Rufus Poliah said that more than 50$ of learners who passed meet the required standard for higher education. A a total of 161 081 distinctions were achieved, up 1.8% from 2016

The IEB matric pass rate, which was announced earlier in the week, was 98.76%.
