Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga reckons that the current batch of matric pupils will do far better in the National Senior Certificate Examinations, which are scheduled to be written at the end of October.

Motshekga outlined her department’s state of readiness ahead of the matric exams on Friday afternoon, 8 October 2021.

“In our meeting yesterday I was informed that this cohort would be able to surprise us with better results than last year. They are a much resilient group and have a much better foundation based on their foundation of learning,” she said.

More than 735 000 fulltime matric pupils will sit down for the exam, while the number of part-time learners is at over 128 000. They will be stationed at 11 000 examination centres across the country. The Department of Basic Education has already roped in 41 596 exam markers who will be placed at 194 centres.

“We have consulted with provinces to check on their state of readiness, and provinces have confirmed that it is all system go. In terms of learner support, the Woza Matrics Campaign is available and offers tuition support to Grade 12 learners in ten subjects”

The matric exams will be written from 27 October until 7 December and the results will be released on 21 January 2022.

Angie Motshekga urges pupils to study for exams

Angie Motshekga says the current Matric pupils were Grade 11’s Class of 2020 that did not complete their curriculum. However the minister says through the hard work and dedication of teachers, they have been able to cover the entire curriculum of 2021, and even had enough time to do some revision work.

Motshekga has urged matric pupils to make use of all available learning resources to prepare for their final exams.

“We urge all our learners to take advantage of the learning and teaching support materials as well as the support availed through the campaign. We also have hundreds of zero-rated platforms on our website,” she said.
