Marketplace advertisers urged to be wary after ANOTHER robbery

Cape Town police have urged marketplace advertisers to be wary of scams after another robbery occurred in Browns Farm, Phillipi.

The police in Cape Town has urged marketplace advertisers to be extra cautious when dealing with potential customers. 

The police noted that Nyanga and surrounding areas are potential hotspots.

An ambush on a marketplace advertiser prompted the warning

Sergeant Wesley Twigg said that the marketplace advertiser was lured to Browns Farm, Philippi, under the pretext of delivering the advertised goods. He was robbed by four suspects supposedly involved in the scam.

The victim managed to flag down Nyanga police who were on patrol.

One arrest was made

A police investigation into the incident resulted in the arrest of a 17-year-old female. She was spotted and arrested however, the search for the other suspects involved in the scam continues.

Once the teenager is charged, she will appear before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

Marketplace advertisers are urged to exercise caution

“Another plea is made to all social media advertisers to exercise caution when dealing with potential customers,”

said Twigg.

Nyanga police have reportedly recorded a number of incidents where marketplace advertisers were lured to the same area before being robbed.

On 12 October 2022, six teenage suspects, aged 15 to 17, were arrested after an attempted robbery on a marketplace advertiser.

In September, three other suspects were arrested for a similar incident.

Post Office warns of customs email scam – here’s how to spot it

Meanwhile, it was previously reported that the South African Post Office has issued a warning to the public about a scam email being sent by fraudsters.

According to the SA Post Office, the scam emails are being sent to convince the receiver to pay money into the account of the fraudsters.

The fraudulent email will state that a parcel addressed to the receiver is being retained due to outstanding customs fees. Read the full story here.
