A sergeant attached to the Marianhill South African Police Service (SAPS) station in KwaZulu-Natal is expected to appear in court on Monday, 12 August, on a murder charge.

MARIANHILL SERGEANT NABBED FOR MURDER

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the suspect was arrested on Thursday, 8 September, after allegedly kidnapping and murdering a suspect in Dassenbroek, Marianhill.

“The IPID investigation led to the discovery of the deceased’s body which was hidden under the stormwater pipe near Camperdown,” said IPID spokesperson, Lizzy Suping. The local search and rescue dog unit, Marianhill SAPS and the National Intervention Unit helped with the investigation.

According to the report, the deceased was allegedly taken in for questioning by the Sergeant on 21 August. He never returned home.

The accused is being held in the cells of Pinetown police station and is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Suping said the investigation continues and there is a possibility of more arrests.

SEVEN EMPD OFFICERS ARRESTED

In an unrelated matter, IPID arrested seven Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers for murder and defeating the ends of justice on Saturday, 10 September. The accused will also make their first court appearance on Monday in the Tsakane Magistrate’s Court.

“It is alleged that the officers went into a shack in Langaville, Extension 6, on the 8th of September 2022, where they found 4 African males. Two were sleeping and the other two watching TV,” said Suping.

“As the officers entered the shack, two of the occupants in the shack ran to the outside. Two police officers gave chase leaving the other officers with the other two males inside the shack.”

The victims in the shack were allegedly beaten by the officers and heard gunshots and one of their friends screaming for help outside. The police left the scene and the men in the shack left to look for their friends.

One of their friends was found with two gunshot wounds to his leg. They took him to hospital and then went to Tsakane police station to open an attempted murder case. While at the station, they received a call and were informed that their missing friend was found dead behind a shack in Langaville.
