How kidnapped Mpumalanga municipal manager was found in Diepsloot

Margaret Skosana and her driver were kidnapped outside the municipal building by suspects in police uniform on 20 October.

Nkangala district municipality’s manager, Margaret Skosana, and her personal driver, Gugu Mtsweni, were kidnapped outside the municipal building in Middelburg on 20 October. The victim’s vehicle, wheelchair and other belongings were recovered on the same day but it would be days before the pair were reunited with their families.

MPUMALANGA KIDNAPPING VICTIMS FOUND IN GAUTENG

According to the police, the victims were kidnapped by suspects in police uniforms. CCTV footage later showed the victim’s car and a white sedan driving out of town. The abandoned car and belongings were found at a mine in the Middelburg area.

Late on Wednesday, 26 October, Skosana and Mtsweni were found in bushes near Diepsloot, Gauteng.

The victims were reportedly left near the N14 road and Mtsweni – who was tied up with ropes – managed to crawl to the road where a taxi driver passing by spotted her.

“She then related the story to the taxi driver. Members of the police deployed under Operation Khuculula in Diepsloot were patrolling along R114 and they were then alerted by the taxi driver about the predicament of the victims upon which the members went to investigate,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

The police members took the victims to the Diepsloot police station where they were kept in the Victim Empowerment Office while waiting for detectives to arrive.

After being attended to by detectives, Skosana and Mtsweni were taken to a hospital and they were eventually reunited with their families early on Thursday, 27 October.

No arrests have been made thus far and the suspects remain at large. Mpumalanga police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela, members will work until the alleged kidnappers are caught.
