Manhunt launched after deputy principal killed in hail of bullets at school

Police said a manhunt had been launched after a Tembisa deputy principal was killed in a hail of bullets at the school.

A manhunt was launched for the killers of a beloved Thembisa deputy principal who was gunned down at the Phomolong Secondary School in Tembisa.

POLICE CONFIRMED IT WAS THREE GUNMEN IN A WHITE VEHICLE

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the motive for the murder could not be confirmed at this stage.

“Police are searching for the suspects after a deputy principal was shot and killed at the driveway of the school in Tembisa on Friday 21 January 2022, at approximately 14h50,” he said.

Masondo said the preliminary investigation revealed that there were three gunmen in a white vehicle.

Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in apprehending the suspects to please call the nearest police station or crime stop on 08600 10111. The Gauteng Education Department spokesperson Steve Mabona searlier said the 50-year-old deputy principal was shot and killed as she was driving out of the school gate on Friday afternoon.

“According to information at our disposal, the incident occurred in the afternoon when she was driving out of the school gate. Three gunmen suddenly appeared and allegedly shot her three times through the passenger window.

Mabona said she got out of her car trying to evade the hailstorm of bullets, but she fell just beside the car.

One of the gunmen allegedly shot her twice while she was on the ground, and they fled the scene without taking anything from her.

Mabona added that a Psycho-Social Unit would visit the school on Monday, 24 January 2022, to conduct counselling and support for all those affected by this incident.

“This was a hardworking, dedicated, and committed teacher who was also loved by many at school and community,” he said.

The Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said he was devastated by the death of this beloved teacher.

COUNSELLING WILL BE PROVIDED FOR ALL THOSE AFFECTED

“We sincerely wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family and the entire school community.

“Indeed, the motive of this level of cruelty is unknown, but I’m comforted that this case has been taken over by the Provincial SAPS and as such we are adamant that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” said Lesufi.

MEC Lesufi is scheduled to visit the school on Monday. He is also planning on visiting the deputy principal’s family to convey his condolences.

Tembisa police are further investigating the circumstances surrounding this fatal incident.
