Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said members from Durban, the Gauteng Organised Crime Investigation Unit and the Explosives Unit worked together during the operation.

“The multi-disciplinary team received information about a vehicle which allegedly contained drugs and firearms at Berea Centre in Durban,” said Mhlongo.

When the team arrived at the location, they found the vehicle parked. No individuals were anywhere in sight.

The vehicle was searched and officers found two bags that contained 30 000 mandrax tablets with a street value of approximately R1.5 million.

Six firearms, a stun grenade and 106 rounds of ammunition were also found in the suspicious vehicle.

The Hawks spokesperson said the seized firearms would be sent for ballistic testing to see if they were used in any other crimes across the country.

No arrests have been made in connection with the seizure and the investigation continues.
