United States President Donald Trump has gathered criticism from across the globe this week after he announced the US recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. With many world leaders seeing it as an act of provocation in the Palestine v Israel land battle, Mandla Mandela has echoed those thoughts.

Mandla, Nelson Mandela’s grandson, put out a statement on Thursday evening calling it an act of perverse incitement and aggression against the Palestinians and all freedom loving people across the globe.

“It affirms that, once again, the USA regime is on the wrong side of history. Just as it supported apartheid South Africa’s brutality it now unashamedly supports apartheid Israel and its ongoing genocide in Occupied Palestine,” he said in a statement.

“Trump’s illegal declaration defies all international law and has reduced the peace process to a mockery, in which the expansion of illegal settlements continues unabated. Only the extremely insane and seriously delusional can construe such dastardly acts of aggression against UN recognised Palestinian rights as contributing to peace.”

On Wednesday, Trump announced that he had “determined that it is time to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel”. At the same time, he was instructing his country’s State Department to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. While Trump said it will advance peace talks and the “two-state solution”, the Palestinians thought otherwise.

“President Trump tonight made the biggest mistake of his life. Instead of encouraging the parties to sit together, the parties to put all core issues including Jerusalem on the table and negotiate in good faith, he dictates.” – Palestine Liberation Organization Secretary-General Saeb Erekat.

Mandla Mandela called Trump’s declarations “illegal” and slammed the Israeli regime

“..illegal declarations which add fuel to the raging fire of apartheid Israel’s illegal occupation, its denial of the right of return of 6 million refugees in the Palestinian diaspora, its daily humiliation of women, children and the elderly and treatment of them as pariahs in the land of their birth, the illegal daily torture and incarceration of hundreds of Palestinian political prisoners including women and children, and the heinous construction of Israel’s apartheid wall.”

While the world expresses their anger for Trump, things have only gotten more volatile as the quest for a peaceful two-state solution now looks to be all but dead.
