Police said a man was shot and killed after someone opened fire on him and his friends while they were driving on the m4 Freeway in Gqeberha.

A man was shot and killed after someone opened fire on him and his friends while they were driving on the M4 Freeway in Gqeberha.

THE RANDOM SHOOTING HAPPENED ON THURSDAY EVENING

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said a group of friends was driving a Grey VW Polo hatch on the M4 when shots were suddenly fired at their vehicle.

“According to a preliminary report, at about 19:34, the 27-year-old driver was driving his Grey VW Polo hatch with two friends on the M4 freeway.

“Suddenly they heard a loud noise that sounded like a tyre burst but immediately realised that they had been shot at. The driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the railings on the side.”

THE MAN WAS FOUND SHOT AND KILLED IN THE BACK OF THE CAR

She said the driver and one passenger got out and ran away.

When they returned to the vehicle, they found their other friend, seated in the back, dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

“Suspects are unknown at this stage, and the motive for the shooting is under investigation. Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.”

Van Rensburg said the man who was shot and killed was identified as 34-year-old Makilone Rapelang Emanuel of Makangiso Street in Motherwell.

Meanwhile, last month a 28-year-old was arrested on Sunday morning for an alleged hijacking using a toy gun. 

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the alleged hijacking suspect was arrested at about 00:15 on Sunday morning, 6 March.

“It is alleged that on Saturday, 5 March 2022 at about 23:45, the owner of a maroon Datsun Go was seated in his vehicle at garage in Maku Street where he stopped to buy airtime.” 

While he was stopped at the garage an unknown male tried to grab his cellphone as he was loading the airtime. 

“Immediately two other men appeared and pointed a firearm at him.”
