The Kuruman Regional Court has sentenced a 32-year-old man from Mothibistad to 22 years in direct imprisonment for the rape of a 6-year-old girl.

SAPS welcomes sentence for rape

The South African Police Service (SAPS) welcomed the verdict.

They highligted their commitment to prioritizing the safety and security of women and children.

The incident occurred on 28 November 2016 at approximately 18:00 when the neighbor asked the victim to help him retrieve his money that had fallen into his unused pit toilet.

The aunt noticed the victim and the neighbor exiting the toilet, with the young girl crying.

After the girl reported the incident to her aunt, the accused was arrested.

Brigadier Kheswa, the Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, commended Captain Keitumetse Semetsa of the Kuruman FCS for her thorough investigation, which led to the successful prosecution and the exemplary sentence.

The SAPS reiterated their commitment to addressing gender-based violence and prioritizing the safety and security of women and children.
