Man on bus to Cape Town caught with drugs worth over R5 million

Police said a 51-year-old man had been arrested after he was found in possession of drugs worth R5 million in Mossel Bay, in the Western Cape.

A 51-year-old man was arrested after he was found in possession of drugs worth R5 million on a bus in Mossel Bay, in the Western Cape.

DRUGS WERE FOUND IN BOXES ON BUS

According to police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie, the discovery of the drugs was made on a bus en route to Cape Town on Friday.

Pojie said they received information about a number of suspicious boxes in the bus and found a large quantity of mandrax tablets.

“The Inspector noticed a suspicious amount of sealed boxes in the luggage compartment of the bus and decided to do a proper inspection when the bus stopped at Voorbaai, in Mossel Bay.

“He ensued with a search and found that the boxes were concealing a consignment of what seemed to be Mandrax. He notified SAPS, which responded rapidly and confirmed that the content of the boxes is indeed Mandrax tablets,” he said.

MANDRAX TABLETS WERE FOUND INSIDE THE BOXES

Pojie said a charge of bribery has also been added after the suspect offered money to the arresting officer.

“When the man was arrested, he offered a substantial amount of cash to the arresting officer in an effort to be released,” he said.

THE MAN TRIED TO BRIBE THE POLICE OFFICER

The man is expected to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of dealing drugs and bribery.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, has praised the members involved for their diligence and vigilance that once again ensured that the streets of the Western Cape are rid of drugs that pose a threat to the safety of our vulnerable communities.

He was pleased to announce that the cooperation between long-distance bus companies has improved lately and the initiative to appoint inspectors to check luggage frequently is commendable.
