A man was killed, and three others were injured when their car overturned on the N17 in Trichardt, Mpumalanga, on Sunday afternoon.

THE VEHICLE WAS FOUND ON ITS ROOF

According to ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell, paramedics were first on the scene at 14:24.

“A light motor vehicle was found some 50 meters into the veld on its roof and the four occupants sitting beside it.

“The man in his late 30s and a 34-year-old woman had suffered critical injuries and were treated with Advanced Life Support interventions and transported to Evander Provincial Hospital,” Campbell said.

THE MAN WAS DECLARED DEAD ON THE SCENE

He said the man succumbed to his various injuries upon arrival at the hospital.

“The man succumbed to his various injuries upon arrival at the hospital, and resuscitation by the hospital’s doctors was unfortunately unsuccessful. He was declared dead by the doctors on hand.”

Campbell said two other men in their 30s were found to have suffered moderate injuries in the rollover and were treated and transported to Evander Provincial Hospital by another private service on the scene.

The Fire Department and the South African Police Services were also on the scene for further investigations.

WHAT TO DO AFTER AN ACCIDENT:

  1. Stop your car and stay at the scene
  2. Firstly, stop your vehicle and, in the interest of road safety, switch on your hazards to warn other drivers. Climb out of your car if it is safe to do so and check if anyone has been hurt. If you can, take pictures of the damage to all the vehicles involved in the incident.
  3. Help anyone who has been hurt
  4. While you can only be criminally charged for causing the accident and any resulting injuries, as a bystander, you have a moral obligation to help someone who has been hurt in a road accident. Help includes contacting an ambulance or rescue unit, even if the injuries do not appear to be serious. It’s critical that you don’t move the injured party and that you do not administer first aid unless you are qualified to do so.
  5. Get the details
  6. Record the information of everyone involved in the road accident, including personal details, vehicle registration numbers, tow-truck information, and insurance details. Take note of all road names, landmarks, intersections, and robots, as you will have to draw a sketch and description of the accident on your police report and for insurance purposes.
  7. Report the accident
  8. Inform the police within 24 hours of the road accident. If the police come to the scene, don’t move anything until they say you may. Ensure that you get an Accident Report (AR) number, as this is needed for any insurance claim or third-party claim you may lodge.
