A man’s decomposing body was found in Shauderville, Eastern Cape on Saturday, 3 December. He was identified as Siyabulela Zonqo, 35, on Wednesday.

DEAD MAN’S BODY IDENTIFIED

Zonqo’s body was found in Grundling Street by a man who lives in the bushes. The man was looking for scrap metal near a school at approximately 9:00 when he saw a large cream bag lying behind a tree against the wall.

“He opened the bag and found a body of a male who was already in a state of decomposition. The deceased person had a belt around the neck, hands tied behind his back with another belt and his feet bound with sellotape. The bag was also tied up,” said Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

The bush dweller reportedly alerted the community before running away.

On Wednesday, the police said Zonqo’s identity was confirmed. The deceased’s family said they became suspicious when he failed to return home after leaving on 29 November.

“It is alleged that Zonqo and a friend left their home in Veeplaas to look for a job. At about 15:00, on the same day, they visited a tavern in Korsten. When at about 18:00, his friend was looking for him to go home, he was nowhere to be found,” said Naidu.

The circumstances around Zonqo’s disappearance and murder are under investigation.

Members of the public who may have seen the deceased leaving the tavern are encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Detective-Sergeant Landiswa Sokanyile, at 073-448-5539.
