A man was arrested for being in possession of R500,000 worth of chrome that he said was gathered by illegal miners

The Limpopo Highway Patrol team arrested a man and seized chrome worth an estimated street value of R500,000 on Wednesday, 11 January.

Man found in possession of chrome

A 38-year-old man was arrested while driving along the R37 road next to Atok in the Apel policing precinct outside Burgersfort.

At around 23:00, the members were performing routine patrols when they noticed an overloaded tipper truck traveling in the direction of Burgesfort.

Driver says the load was gathered by illegal miners

When questioned about the load, the driver stated that he was transporting chrome allegedly gathered by illegal miners at an Atok mine.

The suspect was immediately apprehended, and the truck was confiscated.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 13 January.

He is facing a charge of unlawful possession of precious metals (chrome). The police investigation is ongoing.
