A 66-year-old motorist is expected to appear in court for culpable homicide after driving under the influence in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, 14 December.

Man knocks over two cyclists

Following his arrest by members of the Potchefstroom Flying Squad on Wednesday evening, 14 December 2022, a 66-year-old motorist is expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court.

He will appear on Monday, 19 December 2022, for culpable homicide and driving under the influence.

According to information, the police were notified about a white bakkie that collided with two cyclists in Potchefstroom’s Forsman Street but did not stop.

Shortly after receiving the report, the police successfully tracked the vehicle, just as it was about to enter the suspect’s residence.

The vehicle was damaged and had blood stains, according to an inspection.

Arrested on charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence

Two victims are believed to have been discovered at the accident scene on Forsman Street, one of whom was certified dead by Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) paramedics.

The second victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The suspect was arrested right away and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a narcotic-like drug, culpable homicide, and failing to stop after an accident.

Provincial Commissioner of North West Lt Gen Sello Kwena,  warned motorists not to drink and drive because the police and other law enforcement agencies will not hesitate to enforce the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996) to ensure that those who violate the law are dealt with appropriately as part of road safety management.
