Man who raped woman, 72, and killed brother hands himself over to SAPS

A man handed himself over to the SAPS after he repeatedly raped an elderly woman and brutally killed her 64-year-old brother.

A 30-year-old man has handed himself over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for the rape of a Pietermaritzburg pensioner and the murder of her brother. The SAPS said the incident occurred on Bridge Road in Prestbury at 16:00 on Sunday, 5 June.

An elderly man was killed and his sister was repeatedly raped

It’s been reported that the siblings were held hostage by the suspect. SAPS Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the 64-year-old man was stabbed in the neck, chest and under the left arm.

His 72-year-old sister was repeatedly raped before the suspect fled the scene.

“A 64-year-old man was fatally stabbed on the neck, chest and under the left arm and died at the scene. A 72-year-old woman who was found at the scene alleged that the suspect repeatedly raped her before fleeing the scene on foot,”

said Gwala.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon

Gwala said the suspect handed himself over to the SAPS on Tuesday, 7 June. The suspect is expected to appear before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon, reports IOL.

Crime stats: Over 10 800 people raped between January and March 2022

Minister of Police Bheki Cele released the quarter four crime statistics for 2021/2022.  The briefing was held in Pretoria on Friday, 3 June, where Cele touched on a number of topics – including rape.

The figures released on Friday reflect crime reported to the SAPS in the first three months of this year. There has been an increase of 1 666 in the number of sexual offences reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS) as compared to last year. In the first three months of 2022, the number of sexual offences increased by 13.7% to 13 799.

The stats were announced by Minister of Police Bheki Cele. The information compares lockdown Level 1 this year with lockdown Level 3 last year. However, the stats only include information that was REPORTED to the SAPS. Rape cases went up by 13.7%. An increase of 1 300 cases was reported making the number of rapes the police know about a massive 10 818. Read the full story here.
