AGANG leader Maphela Ramphele has described Julius Malema, of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as being like Adolf Hitler or Benito Mussolini.

During a lecture she gave at a Polokwane high school, Ramphele drew comparisons between the EFF and two of the Twentieth Century’s most notorious dictators, reminding her audience, “You must not forget how Hitler and Mussolini emerged as leaders because desperate people were looking for an alternative.” She said that Malema was making dangerous promises on land expropriation to desperate people, like the Nazi leader and Italian Fascist leader had done ahead of World War II.

Ramphele encouraged listeners to look beyond Malema’s land expropriation policies and think about his actions. “He is facing corruption charges and does not pay his taxes,” she said.

Malema and Ramphele each represent two of South Africa’s newest political groups hoping to contest South Africa’s national election in 2014.

Although Malema has previously called Ramphele a “failed businesswoman”…“looking for a pension”, he responded to Ramphele’s accusations by saying, “I want to pass a message to her that Ma Ramphele, I still love you and respect you very much.”

Recalling her friend Van Zyl Slabbert, in whose memory the lecture was held, and who had led the Progressive Federal Party, Rampehele said he would have been sad to see the poverty that people live in, even with democracy.

Ramphele referenced accusations made against the ANC: that they had threatened to remove the RDP property rights of citizens of Mokopane if they did not vote for the ANC. Ramphele described this as “criminal.” She encouraged voters to treat elections as a time to think about the future and make a wise decision.
