Male and female suspects arrested for murders of illegal miners

Male and female suspects were arrested by multi-disciplinary law enforcement agencies for their alleged involvement in the murders of illegal miners in Selby, Johannesburg.

MALE AND FEMALE SUSPECTS BROUGHT TO BOOK AFTER DRAMATIC SHOOTOUT

Xolani Fihla, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (spokesperson), confirmed that an integrated team consisting of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit together with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Ekurhuleni District Trio Task Team arrested the male and female suspects for the possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Selby, Johannesburg.

He said on Thursday, 11 May 2023, the operational team followed up on information about a suspect wanted for the murders of illegal miners (Zama Zamas) in Crystal Park, Benoni.

“The information led the team to the suspect’s residence at the Phola Informal Settlement in Selby.”

“Upon their arrival at the informal settlement, the officers were met with a barrage of gunfire and the officers returned fire in self-defence. Amid the gunfight, the officers managed to apprehend a male and female suspect,” said Fihla.

He added, “The female was found with a black bag and when searched a Norinco 45 ACP pistol with the serial number filed off, one magazine with 6 rounds, a hand grenade, and 15 shotgun rounds were found in her possession.
The male suspect was found in possession of a 9mm pistol, twenty-two 9mm rounds, two R5 rounds, and two 223 Remington rifle ammunition. When tested it was discovered that the firearm was sought as per the Ikageng SAPS case”.

DUO EXPECTED TO BE CHARGED FOR ILLEGAL MINERS’ MURDERS

According to Fihla, the duo was arrested and detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS. They will appear in court in due course.
