President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to answer questions in parliament on Thursday. The Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane is scheduled to take on Ramaphosa over the R500 000 Bosasa donation to his CR17 campaign, now a more pressing question surfaced to Maimane, and he requested the “urgent question” be added to Thursday’s Order Paper.

Maimane’s pressing question for oral reply:

Whether the appointments of Ms K P S Ntshavheni to the position of Minister of Small Business Development, Ms R T Siweya to the position of Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Mr F Mbalula to the position of Minister of Transport and Mr Z Kodwa to the position of Deputy Minister of State Security were informed in any way by the fact that both worked for, and received payment from his CR17 campaign?

Mmusi continues to spill the beans

In his request, to the Speaker of the National Assembly Thandi Modise, Maimane revealed that financial statements of the CR17 campaign suggest that the President could have “bought” the loyalty of his current ministers.

“Minister Ntshavheni allegedly used part of the R5 million she received from the CR17 campaign funds to purchase a luxury vehicle and build a mansion in Thohoyandou, while Minister Siweya allegedly benefitted to the tune of R2.3 million while she was around the country campaigning for Ramaphosa to be ANC President. Mbalula and Kodwa were each paid R40 000 according to leaked bank statements, in Mbalula’s case allegedly to supplement his salary.”

CR17 campaign: Who recieved R7 million and what was it for?

This question comes after reports surfaced, that President Cyril Ramaphosa made payments amounting to R7 million to four individuals during his successful CR17 campaign. These individuals later became Cabinet Ministers under Ramaphosa’s reign, namely:

The Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Thembi Siweya, Minister of Small Business Development, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, and Deputy Minister of State Security, Zizi Kodwa. The payments were allegedly for work done to see Ramaphosa elected ANC president.

“The President needs to use his first oral question session for the 6th Parliament to clarify to the people of South Africa and unequivocally state whether these individuals’ payment for work on his campaign is related – in any way whatsoever – to his decision to appointment them as ministers.”

The Presidency is summoned to provide “rational reasons”

The DA, further states that the President must provide “rational reasons” for the appointment of his current Cabinet Ministers.

“This raises great concern as to whether President Ramaphosa acted impartially and rationally when he appointed such individuals and wasn’t repaying them for work done in the bid to get him elected.”
